which color mulch should I choose

Article By Dalton Quigley September 21, 2012

With all of the different options available which
color will make your landscape look its best.

When a client calls about mulching I ask them which mulch
do they want to use? I bet one fourth of the clients say
” which one is best? ” or ” which color looks best? “.
So this always leads me to ask about their priorities because
each mulch has different qualities. When considering color
there is one that truly stands out. Lets take a look at some
of the differences in color.

Black Hardwood Mulch Choice
Nashville-Black-Mulch

Colorful mulch attracts the eye and can compliment the landscape, contrast,
or just fade into not being noticed at all.Brown Hardwood is a perfect example.

Brown Hardwood mulch has really great qualities like insulating the roots from outside changes in temperature, holds moisture in longer, and is a great weed barrier. When cost is a factor brown mulch is a winner as being one of the more affordable however it is one of the least noticed and seems to fade into the back ground. Another
mulch that has good qualities and is similar in color is Pine Straw.

Pine Straw mulch comes in bails and is just as it sounds pine needles from
pine trees. Most pine needles used for mulch are harvested and shipped into
state here in Tennessee. Pine needles have an awesome quality that no other
mulch has and that is it breaks down acidic which makes acid loving plants
very happy and beautiful. Pine Straw is also one of the mulches that lack
a colorful snap to them but is also one of the more affordable. Pine comes in
other forms like nuggets of bark.

Pine Bark Nuggets come in bags and are shipped in state from other places.
Pine bark has some black in the color mix and this adds a little more contrast
with your plants making it have a little benefit of making your plants seem
to stand out more. Pine nuggets are also one of the affordable mulches. Bright colored
mulches are available too.

Red mulch is hardwood chips that have been dyed red. Red mulch adds alot of brightness to the landscape and the plants seem to fade into the background because red is the color of danger and makes the mind feel stressed. If you are looking to have a color in your landscape that makes people look then red is your color. The red mulch seems to look unattractive faster because any change in the brightness of the red is easily noticed since it is so eye catching. Eye catching and classy is our last mulch we will mention which is Black.

Black hardwood mulch is very attractive because of Black mulches ability to absorb
light and this makes a contrast with your plants. No matter the color of your home
black mulch will add an extra pop. Another benefit is weed control properties, it seems
that some black mulch products have charcoal in them which adds to the black color
and can help in preventing some weeds from germinating. Some black mulches get their
color from dyes and may not have the same effect.

With all of the options how does a person choose the best mulch when concerned with
how the color of the mulch will look in the landscape? Brown hardwood is affordable
and will be a little dull colored, Pine straw provides acid but is also dull colored, Pine Bark adds some pop, Red mulch is overboard with brightness, and black mulch will absorb light making a great contrast with your plants. For looks the Black Hardwood mulch will give you the look you are going for when color is a priority. Now go get some Black hardwood mulch so your landscape will look great.

three best reasons to use mulch

Three Best Reasons To Use Mulch in Your Garden Beds

By Dalton Quigley July 8, 2012

Landscaping around your home may be one of the more difficult tasks a person undertakes to improve the value and appearance of a home. Lots of planning and thought go into what plants and where they should go as well as the overall style of the home and how everything feels together. Mulch may be an after thought for many but should be planned in because of some benefits you should know.

Reason 1. Mulch has some benefits that make it worth while to note. One of the major benefits to putting down mulch is water retention. Here in Middle Tn the air averages between 30% humidity to 75% which means that soils can dry out quickly. Dry soil does not have water for plants to take up and will cause dehydration which is the most common cause of new plant failure in the newly installed landscape. Once you water the layer of mulch traps moisture for a longer period of time which enables the plant to store up more water for needed times. Weeds can also be a problem that mulch can help with.

Reason 2. Ok everyone has gone and spent time pulling weeds or at least knows of some-one who has. Pulling weeds can be a time consuming chore and boring to most people. A layer of mulch provides a barrier to new seeds blown on the air from landing in your soil. Soil contact with these seeds from unwanted plants is important for them to germinate and become a plant. So putting down a barrier of soil helps keep weeds from starting in the first place. If the look of your home is important to you then mulching will definitely be in order for you.

Reason 3. Mulching garden beds improve the look of the landscape by providing a consistent color throughout the landscape from one end to the other. Lets say you chose black hardwood mulch then you would have picked a great example of a mulch that contrasts and compliments a landscape really well. The dark glossy greens of landscape plants when grown in a bed of dark black mulch just catches the eye from a distance and gives feel of order, cleanliness, and also adds an upscale nature to the area. This can be a very dramatic upscale impression on guests.

Colors of Mulch in most Middle Tennessee Nashville area Garden Beds are Black, and Brown.

The best reasons to use mulch are that it provides a barrier that holds in water for the benefit of plants, keeps unwanted plants seeds from coming in contact with the soil so you get less weeds, and it improves the look of your home which has benefits with guests and neighbors. Take a look at your garden beds and if mulch is not present you will see what I mean and that makes it time to purchase some mulch. When should I get mulch?

When Should I get Mulch?

By Dalton Quigley of Quigley’s Landscaping October 7, 2012

Some think of Spring and Fall but here is exactly when you should add some mulch.

When should I mulch my Nashville landscape Fall or Spring?

Notice mulching time is near?

Most of the time we come home and the mulch is not noticed, except one day
we look down and oh man do we need some fresh mulch.

Well if we know the reasons we have mulch in the first place we
can better understand when it needs to be freshened up.

Why do we have mulch in our landscape beds?

Here are three important reasons for mulching.
One of the reasons is to hold moisture near the soil for longer periods. Another
reason is to prevent weeds and lastly is to make the landscape look better
with contrasting or complimenting colors.

Your mulch means you water less because it keeps the beds moist longer.

So now we know why we have the mulch lets decide when to apply new mulch.
If you are in a drought period adding mulch would be a great way to keep
the water near the roots for longer periods so they don’t dry out quickly
and leave your plants dying. Add a couple of inches of your favorite mulch
to preserve moisture. When your mulch starts to get thin it does a less effective
job of holding down the moisture. If you happen to think of this in Spring or Fall then great but anytime is fine. Mulch as a weed barrier is important.

Keeping weeds under control is what mulch does best.

If you look and now are getting more weeds than usual it could mean that
airborne seeds are getting through your mulch to the soil level beneath and
this means you need more mulch. Order a couple of yards and spread for a
better weed barrier in your landscape. If the look of your home is important
then mulching may be needed. Seasons are great reminders but anytime of year is fine.

Brightens the look of your home.

Once a few months go by and your mulch starts to loose its color adding a little
could brighten it up and help your home to look better. Order some mulch
and have it spread all over for a great color improvement to the landscape. Spring and Fall are great but anytime is fine.

So some great reasons to buy, get delivery, and have mulch installed are
water conservation around roots, to help prevent weeds, and to improve
the look of your home. If you need mulch just stop by our Mulch Distributors page

scoop of mulch2

What is a Scoop of Mulch?

By Dalton Quigley

Someone in the Nashville Middle TN area has described to you that mulch is sold by the scoop at their location. What does this mean? The answer will sometimes confuse people because the person on the other end of the phone says ” A scoop is _ $ ” and now you are wondering – What is a scoop?

Skidsteers, and Bobcat type machines are used for loading mulch onto trailers, and trucks. The scoop refers to the bucket attachment on the front of the machine and you need to ask what size it is and how much mulch that is. If the answer is a scoop costs -$ that doesn’t tell you how much mulch it is.

Below is a photo of a scoop of mulch. In Nashville most mulch suppliers use a machine with a large bucket on it which will dump the mulch onto your truck or trailor. A scoop of mulch could be different sizes depending on where you go so ask how large the bucket is. By knowing the size of the bucket you will know how much mulch you are getting.

Buckets range in size :

1/2 yard bucket

3/4 yard bucket

1/4 yard bucket

Loose materials like mulch, and soil are measured by Cubic Feet and Cubic Yards.

But how much is this related to Cubic Feet which is how you will actually measure what you need?

To understand cu ft you will need to multiply your length times your width times the depth.

L x W x D = Cu Ft

You are going to be looking to get to a cubic yard number to tell the person how much you will need.

Formula for figuring out your cubic feet and then cubic yards

Depth is confusing because 12 inches = 1 ft so here is an easy way to figure this part. Take your 3″ of mulch that you want and call it .25 since 3″ is 1/4 of 12″.

So lets say your bed is 10′ by 10′ and you want mulch 3″ deep.

You will change the formula according to the depth of mulch you would like to achieve.

Example – 10′ x 10′ x .25 = 25 cu ft well 27 cu ft is a yard so you need 1 yard because you always want a little extra anyway.

Then take your Cu Ft and divide by 27 to know how many Cu Yds you will need.

We hope this article helped you to figure out how much mulch you need and gave you the tools so you could order your mulch.
